“Do you think you can go further, Sorcha?”

She didn’t answer David’s query with anything more than a nod, though he could tell by the way her shoulders slumped as they rode side by side, she was bone-tired.

They had traveled all day, stopping only to water the horses and eat what was left in the cloth bag hanging from his belt, and now dusk was falling. All the while Sorcha had said little to him other than to answer if she felt hungry, or needed to attend to herself, and he had decided it was best not to press her for anything more.

His urgency to reach Dumbarton as soon as they could seemed to match her own, and she had been the one to insist an hour ago that they continue along the road when he had asked her if she wanted to stop and rest for a while.

Insist? Actually, she had fairly shouted at him that Campbell Castle might be under attack at that very moment—and how dare he suggest that they rest when everyone she held dear could be in mortal danger.

If she had disliked him before, now she didn’t seem to even want to look at him, yet what else could he have done? He had taken their horse to the creek where he had spied the bandits riding through the trees toward the clearing, and had rushed back up the hill to hide behind the tree—waiting for the right instant to strike.

Not with the bastards spread out where it would have been more difficult to cut all of them down—and mayhap expose Sorcha to even greater danger—but when they had lunged together at her. Would she forgive him once she knew his reasoning? He had been angry enough with himself afterwards for having left her alone and sleeping, which had forced him to use her as a lure if only to protect her, his decision having nothing at all to do with gaining horses—

“I know this place.”

Sorcha had reined in her horse at the curve of the road to look around her, but mainly to the right, into the trees.

David stopped to
